Best Surf Season (December - April)

Ciruelo hits its stride in the dry season. From December through April the northerly trade wind regime becomes established and offshore flow from the N, NNW, WNW and NW quadrant blows across the beach with far greater frequency. While December still shows a shorter-period mix (10.3s average), January-March see periods climb into the 9-12s range and April jumps to 13.7s. The swell direction also shifts toward the favored SSW/SW/WSW window, and with the rains at their lowest, the water stays clean and the sandbars line up. April is the standout month, with 68% ideal wind and over 78% of the swell arriving from the optimal SSW/SW/S window.

Fair Surf Season (May - August & November)

As the ITCZ migrates north, the southern hemisphere storm track begins feeding long-period SSW swell to Ciruelo on a regular basis; by May-June wave periods sit near 14s and a massive percentage of the available energy comes from the SSW (nearly 96% in June). The catch is wind. The dry-season northerly hold weakens and is replaced by afternoon SW/WSW/W sea breezes, so quality depends on catching dawn offshores or early morning windows. July and November still offer respectable 68-69% ideal-wind percentages, while May and August sit close behind. This is the true swell-rich but wind-rustled period.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

September and October are the most challenging months at Ciruelo. Swell energy remains abundant - average periods hold near 13.5s and the SSW direction dominates over 93% - but the rainy season peaks and the onshore quadrant becomes the default. SW and WSW winds combine for more than 40% of the wind distribution in both months, cutting the ideal-wind percentage to 51-53%. The same long SSW pulses that hold so much potential are often chopped into lumpy, bumpy waves. If you can wait out the morning low-pressure clouds, there are still occasional late-season gems, but consistency is poor.
