Playa Cambutal seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Cambutal is a south-facing Pacific beach in Panama, and it runs on Southern Hemisphere swell. The best months line up when the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is pushed south and high pressure over the Caribbean cranks up the northeast trade winds. From December through April, offshore flow out of the N, NNE and NE blows straight off the land, grooming the persistent SSW and SW groundswell into clean, rippable peaks. Wave heights average 3-4ft (1-1.2m) but the period sits in the powerful 12-14s band, so there is real push behind every set. This is the dry season, with lighter rainfall and warm water, and it delivers the most consistent combination of surf and smooth surface conditions all year.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the ITCZ creeps north and the austral winter storm track strengthens across the South Pacific, the swell window at Cambutal becomes even more active. Average heights build to 1.4m (4-5ft) and periods reach 13.6-14.2s, with the vast majority of the energy arriving from the SSW and SW. However, the wind regime backslides: the trades weaken and westerly, cross-onshore flow takes over. Only 38-46% of the time is the wind ideal, so surfers have to pick the windows between rain squalls, early-morning lulls and the occasional brief offshore push. The waves are there, but consistency in quality is harder to find.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

September and October are the foulest wind months at Cambutal. Swell energy stays remarkably high, with SSW and SW swells combining for over 99% of the observations and heights still averaging 1.4m (4-5ft), but the persistent westerly and west-southwesterly winds mean the surface is frequently chopped up. Ideal surf wind drops to only 27-29% in September and October, and rainfall peaks near 10-11mm/day. November is the turning point: the first stronger offshore pulses return and the quality starts to climb again, setting the stage for the excellent December-to-April run.
