Best Surf Season (May - October)

Playa Lagarto is an east-southeast-facing beach on the Panamanian coast, so the real quality window is dictated more by wind cleanliness and long-period swell than by raw size. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts north through late spring and summer, the powerful northeast trade winds relax, and southern-hemisphere lows begin firing long-period groundswell toward Central America. The data backs this up: from May through October, SSW swell accounts for 85-97% of the wave rose, periods sit in the 13.2-14.1s range, and ideal offshore/cross-offshore wind conditions jump to 64-76% of the time. The average height hovers around 1.1m, with most waves in the 0.5-1.5m window, meaning fun-sized, rippable surf is the standard rather than the exception.

Fair Surf Season (November & April)

April and November are transition months. April still has that excellent 13.7s average period and SSW swell is dominant at 58.9%, but ideal winds sit at just 35% as the dying trades mix with developing southern conditions. November remains clean with 75% ideal winds, but the period drops to 12.3s and the first pulses of N/NNW windswell start to creep back into the mix. These months can produce brilliant sessions when the swell and wind line up, but conditions are less consistent than the summer core.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

December through March is the trade-wind season, and Playa Lagarto feels it. The wind rose is dominated by N, NNE, and NNW winds, often blowing 20-40kph, and ideal offshore windows drop to 14-48%. Swell periods fall into the 9-12s range, and the wave mix becomes a lumpy blend of NNW/NNE windswell and less organized SSW pulses. Average heights still hover around 1.0-1.1m, but the combination of short periods, strong cross-shore winds, and less favorable swell direction makes this the most challenging time of year to find clean conditions.
