January: Trade Wind Swell and a Mixed Bag

January is squarely in the dry season along Panama's Pacific coast, with air temperatures averaging 25.5°C, very little rain (0.69 mm/day) and warm water at 27.6°C. The pressure gradient over the Caribbean strengthens the trade wind flow, and at Playa Malibu the wind rose is dominated by NNW (68%) and N (17%) directions-classic offshore flow for this south-facing beach. That sounds clean, but the swell rose tells a mixed story: a large chunk of the energy is short-period NNW and N windswell (26.6% and 9.0%), which is not the direction this spot wants, while the preferred SSW and SW directions combine for only about 24% of the total.

The average swell height is 0.7m (2.3ft) with a period of just 9.0 seconds, so most waves fall into the small, fun-sized, groveling category. Ideal wind conditions register 48% for the month, meaning less than half of January delivers the full recipe. When a genuine S/SW groundswell lines up under a light NNW offshore, Playa Malibu offers clean 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) waves, but they remain inconsistent and easily overshadowed by the shorter-period windswell.
