Best Surf Season (December - April)

Playa Santa Catalina hits its stride when the dry season sets up across Panama's Pacific coast. Strong Caribbean trade winds spill through the isthmus and blow offshore at this SSW-facing beach, keeping the surface glassy and the waves organized. Ideal surf wind runs between 62 and 76 percent during these months, while consistent SSW groundswell with 12-14s periods delivers clean, rippable peaks in the 2-3ft (0.5-1m) range. It may not be the biggest swell of the year, but it is by far the most rideable.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As the ITCZ shifts north and the wet season takes hold, Southern Hemisphere winter storms begin sending more energetic SSW/SW groundswell toward Santa Catalina. Average wave heights climb to around 3ft (1m) with periods pushing 14s, and the percentage of 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves increases significantly. The trade-off is wind: ideal offshore flow drops to 30-37 percent as WSW, W and SW winds take over. Dawn patrols and tide-conscious sessions still offer plenty of good surf, but the ocean surface is less reliable than in the dry season.

Low Surf Season (September - November)

September and October are the toughest months at Santa Catalina, with ideal surf wind bottoming out at 19-22 percent and persistent onshore flow from the WSW and W. The swell is still present, but frequent bumpy conditions, strong tropical showers and peak rainfall make consistent quality hard to find. November marks the turning point as the first pulses of NE offshore flow return and the surf begins to clean up in time for the best season.
