Vanimo's surf clock is tied directly to the Northwest Monsoon. From November through March the monsoon trough sets up across the western Pacific and Indonesia, and the resulting low-pressure belt pumps consistent N, NNE and NNW swell into this north-facing stretch of the Papua New Guinea coast. Average wave heights push to 1-1.3m (3-4.5ft) and average periods sit in the powerful 10-10.6s range, meaning there is genuine shape and punch rather than just tropical wind slop. The ideal wind percentage peaks around 54-58% during this window, particularly from late November through December, while water temperatures hover near 29-30°C (84-85°F) and air temps sit in the 27°C range. This is the most reliable time of year for consistent, rippable surf at Vanimo.
