Lobitos seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - April)

The most consistent surf windows at Lobitos come during the austral summer, when the South Pacific High settles in and the local pressure gradient relaxes. From December through April, ideal wind conditions are present 63-79% of the time, with S/SSW/SW winds blowing clean and offshore across the north-facing bay. The dominant swell direction is far from perfect - SSW and SW pulses account for nearly all of the wave energy - but with average periods of 13.4-14.0s, enough long-period groundswell wraps into the break to keep it in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) fun-to-solid range. This is the most reliable mix of clean surface conditions and rideable size. If a rare N/NNE/NE/NNW swell ever lines up during these months, Lobitos will go off.

Fair Surf Season (May and November)

May and November are transition months. The Southern Hemisphere winter storm track starts to spin up in May, producing bigger SSW/SW swell - average 1.8m (around 6ft) with solid 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) pulses - but the trade winds begin to strengthen, dropping ideal wind percentages to 50-63%. November is the reverse: the strong winter south winds are still around, but the swell is easing back to the 5ft range. Both months can offer good waves when the wind lines up, but you need to pick the windows carefully.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

June through October is the most challenging stretch for surf quality at Lobitos. The south Pacific storm track is at full throttle, sending powerful long-period SSW groundswell - but it is coming from the wrong direction for a north-facing beach. At the same time, strong SSE/S/SSW winds blow 20-40kph, making the surface rough and keeping the Humboldt waters cool (19-20°C). Ideal wind drops to 45-52%. Although average heights remain around 1.8m (6ft), the combination of off-angle south swell and increasingly strong offshore flow means the spot is less consistent and much harder to tame. This is the low season in quality, not necessarily in size.
