Punta Huanchaco is a storied left-hand point break on Peru’s northern coast, offering a long, rolling ride that appeals to everyone from first-timers to seasoned regulars. While it won’t win any awards for hollow barreling sections, its consistent, punchy corners deliver enough juice to keep things interesting without ever feeling intimidating. The wave builds over a mix of uneven reef and sand, stretching from behind the point and, on bigger days, all the way past the pier for a true down-the-line experience. The prime window runs from April through October, with autumn and winter serving up the most reliable swell. Swell energy comes primarily from the southwest, though south and west pulses also do their part, handling anything from waist-high 2-foot rollers to overhead 12-foot sets. Tidal fluctuations are key—low tide exposes quicker, more critical sections, while mid and high tides smooth out the wave, making it easier to link turns from top to bottom. Typical east winds keep the surface glassy or lightly textured, adding to the fun, user-friendly vibe. The local lineup is relaxed but can get crowded, especially on weekends and during peak season. Paddling is moderate, and the wave’s forgiving nature encourages a mellow, sharing attitude. Best suited for shortboards, funboards, longboards, or fishes, Punta Huanchaco is a classic Peruvian point—consistent, inviting, and full of rhythm. Just keep your eyes on the ocean and never turn your back on the sea.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (April - May)

This is the money window at Punta Huanchaco. The South Pacific storm track is fully active during the austral autumn, and the average swell height climbs to 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) with average periods of 13.4-13.5s. More importantly, the wind statistic for clean, offshore conditions peaks at 43-44 percent, the cleanest window of the year. SSW and S swells dominate the directional rose, but they arrive with enough period and west in the direction to wrap into this west-facing beach and produce grinding, rippable peaks.
