Aguaadoura seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Aguaadoura is a pure North Atlantic surf spot, and the full force of the winter storm track arrives between October and March. Average swell heights sit between 7ft and 9ft (2.1m and 2.7m), mean periods hover in the powerful 10.9-12.6s range, and offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE winds blow clean 40-52% of the time. When the Azores High retreats and the NAO tilts negative, extratropical cyclones line up west of Portugal and aim long-period W, WNW and NW groundswell into this west-facing stretch. These are the months when the sandbars hold their shape and the beach delivers consistent, heavy, firing surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
The shoulder months still offer plenty of waves, but the engine is less consistent. Average heights drop to 5-7ft (1.6-2.1m), periods fall to 9.8-11.1s, and ideal wind windows shrink to 26-43%. April and May can still produce strong NW Atlantic pulses, while September marks the first real return of long-period autumn groundswell. Expect a mix of punchy swell with more northerly wind influence and a higher chance of onshore texture.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, the storm track shifts north, and average swell heights drop to 4-5ft (1.4-1.5m) with short-period 8.6-9.2s windswell. The wind rose is dominated by NNW and NW flow, much of which is onshore or cross-onshore, and ideal surf wind only occurs 15-18% of the time. Dawn patrol is still worthwhile for fun-sized, groveling waves, but the low season requires patience and a shortboard with extra volume.
