Albufeira seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October and Albufeira's south-facing beaches finally receive a steady diet of S/SW groundswell. Average wave heights hover around 3ft (1m) and periods climb into the powerful 10-12s range, with January peaking at 11.7s. Offshore N/NNE/NE/NW/NNW winds are most frequent during this window, especially the cold continental northerlies behind passing lows, giving the bay clean, groomed faces. The NAO is a critical lever: when it drops negative, the storm track shifts south and angles more SSW/SW swell into the Algarve. Wave quality is at its best then, though a switch to S/SW wind can quickly turn the same swell to onshore chop.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
As the Azores High strengthens in spring, the Atlantic storm track retreats north and average heights ease to 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m). April still has enough west/northwest groundswell to wrap in, but period drops to 9s and the surf gets punchier. May slides into classic summer-like small surf, while September marks the first stirring of autumn: still small on average, but with longer-period pulses from distant lows beginning to reappear. The swell rose slowly shifts away from summer W/NW windswell and starts to favour the S/SW lines that make Albufeira work.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the Algarve's flat season. Average heights bottom out at 1.5-2ft (0.5m), periods shrink to 6-7s, and the swell is mostly short-period W/WNW windswell and leftover NW sea. The thermal northerly/northwesterly winds do blow offshore, which keeps the ocean inviting, but more often than not there is simply not enough swell to get excited about. Occasional rare SW groundswells can produce fun, clean small waves, but June through August is best for longboarders, beginners and warm-water cruising.
