Baleal seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October, and Baleal feels every pulse of it. Powerful extratropical cyclones marching east toward the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast generate long-period groundswell that stacks up fast on the sandbars and inside reef sections of the Peniche peninsula. Average wave heights sit in the 8-9ft (2.4-2.8m) range with periods consistently pushing 12-13 seconds between October and March. A positive North Atlantic Oscillation tends to amplify the storm track, firing more frequent and more consistent swells into central Portugal. At the same time, frontal systems swinging out of the Atlantic deliver more S/SSW/SW offshore winds, with ideal wind conditions running between 21 and 27 percent of the time. This is prime Baleal: period, size and wind all align for hollow, powerful waves.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the atmospheric river of winter starts to fade, Baleal enters a transitional zone. April and May still see solid WNW/NW/NNW groundswell, but average periods drop to 9-11s and heights ease to 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m). September sees the first real reawakening as Atlantic lows begin to organize, pushing average wave heights back to around 1.7m (5-6ft) and periods back to 10.5s. Winds, however, are more fickle: the Azores High is still influential, and north/northwest winds frequently blow onshore for parts of the day. The fair season rewards those who can read the morning windows and chase the corners when S/SW winds line up.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer in Baleal is a tale of relentless north wind and shrinking swell. From June through August, the Azores High bulges west and the Iberian thermal low pumps a persistent NNW wind - clearly bad for this north-north-east-facing beach. Average wave heights drop to 1.5-1.6m (5ft) and periods fall into the 8.6-9.2s range, too short and too wind-affected to build serious quality. Ideal offshore wind readings plummet to 11-18 percent of the time. There are still fun, rippable days for longboarders and groveler shortboards, especially if you pick a sheltered corner, but summer is no match for the raw power of Baleal's winter months.
