Best Surf Season (October - March)
Bico's northwest-facing sandbar is in prime position when the North Atlantic storm track barrels toward Iberia. From October through March, average swell heights climb into the 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) range, and periods routinely push into the powerful 11-13s zone. The classic scenario involves deep extratropical cyclones developing south of Greenland and tracking east toward the Bay of Biscay, sending long-period W, WNW, and NW swell straight down the Portuguese coast. These months also offer the highest likelihood of offshore easterly-to-southeasterly flow, especially as high pressure builds over the Iberian Peninsula, grooming Bico into glassy, lined-up peaks. December is the standout month, with clean wind conditions around 42% of the time.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the Azores High begins to flex and the polar front retreats north, swell energy drops off but doesn't disappear. April, May, and September are transitional months where Bico sees average wave heights around 3-5ft (1.0-1.5m) and periods in the 10-11s range. The ocean still offers plenty of rideable surf, especially on WNW/NW swells, but wind consistency becomes more of a lottery. Northerly onshore flow - the Portuguese 'nortada' - starts to kick in during April and May, and by September it is still prominent, limiting the number of truly clean, peaky sessions. Still, early autumn can surprise, as the first Atlantic lows of the season deliver building swell before the winter engine fully switches on.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer at Bico is a study in contrasts. The northwest swell window never fully closes, but average heights drop to 3ft (1.0m) and average periods compress to the 8-9s range, meaning the sea state is dominated by shorter-period NW/NNW windswell rather than true groundswell. The Iberian thermal low creates a persistent NNW wind regime, with onshore winds blowing around 50-57% of the time. With only 4-9% of conditions classified as ideal, the windows for clean surf are short and usually arrive early in the morning before the seabreeze builds. Those willing to hunt for smaller, punchy peaks on a longboard or high-volume shortboard can still get their fix, but this is the quiet season.
