Best Surf Season (October - March)
The heart of the action at Cabedelo de Viana is the winter half-year. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track points squarely at Iberia, and average swell heights climb from 2.1m (6.9ft) in October to a seasonal peak of 2.7m (8.9ft) in January. Average wave periods sit in the powerful 11-13s class, with many long-period pulses running 12-15s. The catch is that the low-pressure systems that make the ocean pump also bring south-westerly winds, and the onshore S-SSW-SW quadrant is the enemy of this southwest-facing beach. Still, 51-53 percent of the time the wind is favorable - usually as offshore N through ENE flow in the wake of fronts - and those windows give Cabedelo some of the thumping, barrelling sandbar sessions of the year. The most reliable size months are December, January and February, when solid runs of WNW/NW groundswell can make up for the fact that the truly optimal S-SW swell direction is less common.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the planet tilts toward spring, the average swell drops to 2.1m (6.9ft) in April and 1.7m (5.6ft) in May, but the wave period remains rideable and the ocean starts to glass off. April often produces overlapping west-northwest and northwest swells in the 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) range, while May favors punchy 1-2m (3-6ft) NW windswell. September is the mirror-image return: average height climbs back to 1.6m (5.2ft), period lengthens to 10.4s, and the first autumn lows send new energy into the southwest-facing bay. These shoulder months are the best compromise between surf size and clean conditions, with water temperatures still pleasant and plenty of 60 percent wind consistency in September.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest chapter. The Azores High locks in over the North Atlantic, the storm track retreats toward Ireland, and Cabedelo settles into a diet of small to moderate northwesterly windswell. Average swell heights fall to 1.4m (4.6ft) and periods drop into the 8.6-9.0s range - often just enough for a crowded longboard combo. The saving grace is wind: 58-63 percent of the time the wind is ideal for surfing, making June through August the most consistently clean, manageable conditions of the year. It is not the time for XL Cabedelo, but it is a great time to be in the water and sharpen your grovel game.
