Carcavelos seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life during October, and Carcavelos feels it quickly. From October through March, the average swell height sits between 2.2m and 2.5m (7-8ft), with average periods of 11.4 to 13.1 seconds. These are full-bodied, long-period groundswells generated by strong extratropical storms that slide across the North Atlantic. The beach faces SSW, so the most direct swell attack comes from S, SSW, SW and WSW; when those directions line up, Carcavelos can be a heavy, sandbar-driven beach break with power to spare. A negative NAO pattern often positions the storm track closer to Iberia and unlocks some of the best W/SW swell windows. The classic winter recipe is a deepening low west of Portugal or in the Bay of Biscay plus a building continental high to the north, which sets up N/NE offshore winds. Around 45-48% of the time in winter the wind is already favorable, and the bursts of easterly offshore flow can turn the surface glassy while the swell pulses. This is the most consistent and most challenging surf window of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)
As the seasonal storm track retreats north in late spring, Carcavelos becomes more of a windswell and smaller-groundswell set-up. From April through June and again in September, average heights settle between 1.4m and 1.9m (4.5-6ft), and average wave periods fall to 9-11s. The swell rose is increasingly dominated by NW and NNW energy, which is not the ideal swell angle for a SSW-facing beach; much of the power is lost or refracted into the bay. Still, the late-spring-to-summer pattern of strong NNW coastal winds (often 20-40kph) creates a sideshore and cross-offshore texture, and when the wind goes light N/NE in the morning, the small NW windswell lines can be clean and rippable. A fun S/SW groundswell in April or September, usually courtesy of a late-season or early-season Atlantic low, remains the best ticket to reeling barrels.
Low Surf Season (July - August)
July and August are the flattest months of the year at Carcavelos. The Azores High is fully established and the Atlantic storm tracks are pushed far to the north, so average swell heights fall to 1.3m (4ft) and periods dip to 8.4-8.9 seconds. The wave rose is almost completely dominated by short-to-medium-period NW/NNW windswell; true S/SW/WSW swell is essentially absent. The wind regime is dominated by a strong NNW coastal jet, which at Carcavelos can be cross-offshore rather than fully offshore, and the light N/NE windows are short. Add summer crowds and sea breezes, and the surf quality becomes more about finding an early-morning, low-tide sandbar with a waist-high shoulder. Not a complete flat spell, but definitely the low season for consistent quality.
