Contreiras seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is when the North Atlantic properly wakes up. From October onward, average swell heights climb from 2.0m (6.6ft) to a winter peak of 2.5-2.6m (8-8.5ft), while average wave periods stretch into the 12-13 second range. The Azores High drifts south and releases its grip on the Iberian coast, allowing deep extratropical lows to march east across the Atlantic. Their long-period NW and NNW groundswell lines up perfectly with the NNO-NO-ONO-O swell window that Contreiras needs, and despite often north-heavy winds, the SSW-SW-WSW offshore flows still arrive enough of the time to produce clean, heavy, hollow peaks. This is the heart of the surf year at Contreiras.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

The shoulder seasons offer a trade-off: less raw size but often more user-friendly conditions. April still holds average swell near 2.1m (6.9ft) with 11.2s periods, and May delivers fun, rippable 1.7m (5.6ft) waves as the ocean starts to settle. September marks the autumn turn, with periods creeping back above 10.5s and ideal offshore wind statistics improving to 18 percent. These months are ideal for groveling through the inconsistent stretches and catching the occasional pulse of longer-period NW groundswell without the relentless winter power.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quiet period. The Azores High strengthens and sits over the eastern Atlantic, deflecting the main storm track north and leaving Contreiras with an average swell height of only 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft). Wave periods drop to 8.5-9.3s, and the dominant NNE/NE winds hammer the coast, spiking onshore and sideshore conditions. Ideal wind windows collapse to just 4-13 percent of the time. The rare summer NW pulse can still light up the beach, but consistency is poor. If you come in July or August, bring a longboard and a patient mindset.
