Costa Nova seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
October through March is when Costa Nova transforms into a proper Atlantic heavy-hitter. As the Azores High retreats and the North Atlantic storm track activates, a conveyor belt of strong extratropical cyclones sends powerful, long-period groundswell toward the Iberian coastline. Average significant wave heights sit in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.5m) range with periods frequently reaching 12-13s, and the dominant WNW to NW swells line up perfectly with the west-facing sandbars. Critically, the winter months also bring the highest percentage of offshore wind, particularly from the E/ENE/ESE quadrant when high pressure builds over the Iberian Peninsula, so Costa Nova is often groomed and glassy. When the NAO flips negative or neutral, that continental high sits even closer, directing cool offshore easterlies behind passing lows. Cold-water surfers will need a full winter wetsuit, but the reward is some of the most consistent and powerful surf of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder seasons offer a more user-friendly but less consistent Costa Nova. April and May see average swell heights drop to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods around 10-11s, while September marks the first real pulse of autumn energy as the ocean reawakens from summer slumber. The wave quality is often just as good as winter when an easterly offshore breeze aligns, but ideal wind frequencies fall to 22-40 per cent, and the strengthening northerly/northwesterly trade wind regime can make conditions wind-affected. Still, these months are prime for those chasing cleaner, slightly smaller waves with warmer air and water.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
During summer, the Azores High locks in place over the North Atlantic and the relentless NNW/NW trade wind becomes the dominant feature. Average surf drops to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), and most of that is short-period, locally generated windswell with periods of 8-9s. Offshore wind is rare, with ideal conditions occurring only 9-14 per cent of the time, and the prevailing northwesterly flow adds chop and texture to the water. June and late August are the least bad months, when a stray groundswell pulse can still push through, but the most reliable window is dawn patrol before the seabreeze and afternoon trades kick in. It is the least consistent season, but a fun summer wave is still possible on the best days.
