Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm machine takes center stage from October through March, and Coxos is perfectly positioned to feel its full force. As the Azores High retreats and the polar front pushes south, deep extratropical lows march across the Atlantic, feeding long-period WNW, W and SW swells toward the Iberian coast. Average surf heights sit in the 6-9ft (1.8-2.7m) range with average periods of 11-13 seconds, ensuring real power in the water. NE through ESE offshore winds occur 20-26 percent of the time, especially when a continental high strengthens over Spain, and those are the windows when Coxos turns glassy and serious. The weather is wet and changeable, but the ocean rarely goes flat.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
In April and May the Atlantic still remembers winter. Average swells remain around 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m), but the periods drop to 10-11 seconds and the wind regime becomes more northerly. September is the mirror image, with the first early-autumn lows injecting new life after the summer lull. These shoulder months can deliver world-class days when an early-season storm sends WNW groundswell and a light east wind cleans things up, but consistency drops and the ideal-wind window shrinks to 11-16 percent.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The Azores High locks in, the summer trade wind cranks from the NNW, and Coxos enters its seasonal slump. Average swells drop to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), periods sit below 9 seconds, and offshore winds are rare, with ideal conditions just 4-7 percent of the time. Most days are lumpy north windswell, though early mornings can offer clean, fun-sized waves on a longboard. Patience is required; autumn is always around the corner.
