Best Surf Season (October - March)
The Portuguese winter is when Faja da Areia truly fires. As the North Atlantic storm track accelerates and low-pressure systems march eastward, average swell heights climb to 6.5-8.5ft (2.0-2.6m) with periods ranging from 11.5 to 12.9s. The dominant NNW and NW swells line up perfectly with the beach's exposed north-northwest aspect, delivering powerful, long-period walls. Ideal offshore wind windows from the WSW, SW and S are also more common, especially in December and January when clean conditions ride in 42-43% of the time. This is the money window for big, grinding surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
In the shoulder months, the ocean is still alive but less consistent. April averages 7ft (2.1m) at 11.2s and September runs 5ft (1.6m) at 10.5s, so there is enough groundswell to keep the beach fun, particularly when the wind turns offshore. May sees the Azores High begin to build and swell energy drops to 5.5ft (1.7m) at 10.0s; the window is often compromised by easterly and northeasterly breezes, yet clean mornings can still offer rippable peaks.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the sleepy season at Faja da Areia. The Azores High settles over the region, deflecting Atlantic lows north and shrinking average swell heights to 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m) with periods of 8.5-9.3s. The swell that does arrive is mostly short-period NNW and NNE windswell produced by the persistent northerly flow, and ideal offshore wind windows drop to just 2-6% of the time. Weak, onshore-angled lines and summer crowds are the name of the game; only an infrequent Southern Hemisphere swell or late-season tropical pulse can spice things up.
