Guincho seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Guincho's west-northwest exposure is a magnet for North Atlantic groundswell, and this half of the year delivers the goods. Average swells range from 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) in October to 8-9ft (2.4-2.7m) in January, with wave periods consistently in the powerful 11-13s range. This is when the Icelandic Low cranks up and extratropical cyclones march across the North Atlantic, sending long-period W, WNW and NW swell straight into the beach. Negative phases of the NAO often push the storm track south, right onto Portugal's doorstep, and those same setups favour offshore flow from the eastern quadrant (ENE-E-ESE-SE) - the key to clean conditions here. Expect pumping, firing surf and, on the biggest days, XXL waves that push even experienced chargers.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The ocean transitions between winter and summer, and Guincho becomes a bit of a lottery. Average swells ease to 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m), periods drop to 10-11s, and the persistent north/northwest wind regime starts to strengthen. April can still serve up solid WNW/NW groundswell with a few clean windows, while May and September see plenty of rideable NW windswell, but quality depends on finding morning light winds before the afternoon nortada kicks in. These months reward surfers who do not mind mixing clean waves with a side-shore breeze.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Guincho is a battle against the nortada. The Azores High ridges in, the Iberian thermal low sets up across the peninsula, and the result is a relentless NNW/N wind that blows onshore almost every afternoon. Average swell heights bottom out at 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with short periods around 8.5-9s, mostly windswell generated by that same NNW/NW flow. Ideal wind percentages collapse to just 2-5%, and the surf is often choppy and bumpy. Still, early mornings can offer clean, rippable small waves, especially on a log or a groveler; just do not expect any winter-grade power.
