Best Surf Season (November - March)
When the North Atlantic storm track swings over the mid-latitudes, Jardins do Mar finally has the size and power to live up to its reputation. From November through March the average swell height sits in the 7.5-8.5ft (2.3-2.6m) range, with average periods of 12-13s. These are long-period groundswells generated by intense extratropical cyclones west of Portugal. The catch is the angle: the data consistently shows a heavy emphasis on NNW/NW swell, while the ideal SSW/SW/WSW/W window is much rarer. Still, when low pressure deepens and the NAO goes negative, the swell direction swings westerly enough to light up the southwest-facing bay. Post-frontal high pressure often delivers clean offshore flow from NNW/NW, making the winter months the most consistent for serious surf.
Fair Surf Season (April & October)
April and October are the transition months between winter and summer regimes. Average wave heights sit around 6.5-7ft (2.0-2.1m), with periods in the 11-11.5s range. The storm track is less reliable, but the occasional active low can still produce excellent groundswell. Wind statistics are moderate, with an ideal window 40-46% of the time; days of light cross-shore or variable flow mix with clean offshore windows. If you time it right, you can find punchy, well-shaped waves without the winter crowds.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer in Madeira means the Azores High takes charge and the Atlantic storm track retreats to high latitudes. From May through September average swell heights are small: 4.5-5.5ft (1.4-1.7m), with periods dropping to 8.5-10.5s. The wave rose gets locked into a NNE/NNW windswell pattern, and the ideal SSW-to-W swells become almost non-existent. The good news is that wind conditions are frequently clean, especially August and September when the ideal wind window exceeds 55%. Still, without size or period, Jardins do Mar is mostly a fun summer longboard spot rather than the thundering point that winter offers.
