Luz seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Luz is a south-facing gem on the western Algarve, which means it doesn't see the same relentless NW groundswell as the exposed west coast. Instead, it relies on the less frequent southern-angled swells (SE, SSE, S, SSW) ramping up with the return of North Atlantic storminess. From October through March, the average open-ocean swell height climbs to 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods in the 12-13s range, and the probability of a useful S/SW component peaks. When the synoptic pattern turns negative-NAO, low-pressure systems push farther south, injecting long-period S and SSW swell into the Gulf of Cadiz. Couple that with a N or NW gradient wind (offshore for this beach) and Luz can dish out clean, powerful waves.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transitional - the ocean is between winter's fury and summer's calm. Swell heights average 5-6ft (1.5-1.9m), periods hover around 10-11s, and the southern-angled energy is still present some of the time. September stands out for its high percentage of ideal wind (46%), while April benefits from lingering winter groundswell. These months offer intermittent rideable waves, often with good surface conditions, but without the size and consistency of winter.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the doldrums for Luz. The Azores High locks the region into a stable, dry regime with a dominant N/NNW flow. Offshore winds remain common, but they are accompanied by an almost complete collapse of the southern swell window. The wave rose is monopolised by short-period NW windswell, leaving the bay small, soft, and contested. Water temperatures are warm (17-19°C), air temps comfortable, and there is little rain, but surfers looking for quality waves will be disappointed. The occasional S/SW event can sneak in, but those are rare exceptions in the May-August window.
