Madalena do Mar

Madalena do Mar, a south shore standout on Madeira's rugged coast, functions as an outside bommie-style reef peak, spilling both left and right over a complex, uneven reef bottom. The wave here is decidedly mellow and forgiving, unspooling with sluggish, drawn-out sections across broad, inviting shoulders. Thanks to ample water depth, the ride is smooth and predictable, offering intermediate surfers a playful canvas when the swell pushes in with enough size to animate the peak.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic is the engine room for Madalena do Mar, and from October through March the SSW-facing beach shifts into high gear. Average open-ocean swell height climbs to 7.9-8.5ft (2.4-2.6m) between November and March, October is close behind at 6.6ft (2.0m), and periods hold in the 11.5 to 12.9 second range. This is when the island is most likely to see direct southwest to west-southwest swell and the long-period north-west groundswells that wrap into the bay. During negative NAO patterns, the Azores High weakens and low-pressure systems track farther south, sending powerful pulses toward Madeira while the island's mountains block the worst of the north wind. Expect punchy, powerful surf and the highest chances of standout sessions, although storm fronts can blow the wind onshore and the offshore northerly quadrant is less consistent than in summer.
