Best Surf Season (October - March)
Meio da Baja's north-northwest facing sandbar really hits its stride when the North Atlantic storm machine winds up. From October through March, average surf heights sit between 6 and 9ft (1.8 and 2.8m) with periods routinely over 11 seconds, meaning powerful, long-period NW and WNW groundswell marching straight into the beach. Lows rumbling across the Atlantic and a favorable phase of the NAO often aim the biggest fetch right at the Portuguese coast. The best windows come with winds from the southern quadrant - S, SSO, SO and OSO - which make the wave faces clean and lined up.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early autumn offer a compromise. The ocean is still alive with a mix of WNW, NW and NNW swell, but the periods drop to 10-11 seconds, and the strengthening Azores High starts to add more persistent NNW winds. Those conditions make Meio da Baja less dependable; still, there are plenty of 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) days when the wind flips southerly and the water temp is pleasant.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season. The Azores High settles in and the North Atlantic storm track shifts north, leaving Meio da Baja with smaller, shorter-period NW and NNW swell and a relentless NNW sea breeze almost every afternoon. Ideal wind drops to 5-10 percent, and onshore northerlies turn the surface lumpy. It is still a fun beach to ride when a summer NW pulse shows up, but the spot rarely lives up to its winter reputation from June through August.
