Moledo do Minho seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The year at Moledo do Minho is defined by the seasonal pulse of the North Atlantic. From October through March, the wave machine switches on as extratropical cyclones track across the Atlantic, aiming long-period groundswell into the northwest corner of Portugal. Average wave heights sit in the 7-9ft (2.1-2.7m) range, periods average 11-13s, and the wind is offshore 44-56% of the time, often courtesy of high pressure settling over Iberia and feeding cool east/southeast winds down to the coast. When the NAO trends negative, the Azores High weakens and the storm track dives south, which can turn this already lively stretch of coast into a serious winter surf spot.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

Spring and early autumn are transitional windows where swell energy is still respectable but less consistent. Average heights dip to 4-7ft (1.2-2.1m), periods hover around 10-11s, and the balance between lingering winter lows and developing summer high pressure creates smaller, cleaner waves. The best days come with an easterly offshore wind and a late-season or early-season Atlantic storm; these are excellent accompaniment months for the less committed surfer.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

This is the high price of summer: the Azores High builds, the North Atlantic storm track retreats, and Moledo settles into small windswell mode. Average heights drop to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), periods to 8.7-9.2s, and the persistent north/northwest thermal winds blow onshore much of the time, making conditions choppy and blown-out. The waves remain fun-sized and rippable on the right day, but they are lumpy and wind-affected; for bigger, cleaner surf, wait for the autumn equinox. Water warms to 16.8C while air can reach into the 30s, so a summer wetsuit is the tradeoff.
