Odeceixe seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Odeceixe is a pure winter and early-season wave. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track focuses its energy on the Iberian Peninsula, and this west-northwest-facing beach lines up beautifully with the dominant NW and WNW ground swells. Average wave heights run 2.2-2.5m (7-8ft), with periods in the powerful 12-13s range, and the easterly offshore wind window (ENE through SE) is at its most reliable. December and January are the standout months, when solid, long-period swell coincides with the highest percentage of clean offshore wind.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
Spring and early autumn offer a quieter but still worthwhile Odeceixe. April, May and September see average heights of 1.5-1.9m (5-6ft) and periods around 10.0-11.5s, with the swell direction becoming increasingly NW. The limiting factor is wind: the Azores High strengthens and pumps more north and northwesterly airflow across the coast, cutting clean offshore windows to 18-22% of the time. Early mornings and late afternoons can still deliver clean, rippable waves.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the doldrums at Odeceixe. June, July and August are dominated by small, short-period NW windswell generated by the persistent northerly Iberian wind regime. Average wave heights hover around 1.4m (4.6ft), periods drop to 8.4-9.2s, and ideal offshore winds occur only 8-11% of the time. The combination of small swell and cross-shore/onshore NNW winds makes most days a grovel; look for occasional dawn windows when the land breeze briefly cleans things up.
