Parede seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Parede faces south-southwest, so the swell window that really works is S through WSW, with S/SW/WSW groundswells wrapping cleanly into the bay. That window opens most consistently from October to March, when low-pressure systems track across the North Atlantic and send powerful long-period swell toward the Portuguese coast. The stats back it up: monthly averages range from 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) with periods between 11 and 13s, while true offshore wind - N, NNE, NE and ENE - blows 45-48% of the time. The winter months have more raw energy, but the quality peaks under a negative NAO pattern that pushes storm tracks far enough south to fire the S/SW window at Parede.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April still has some of winter's groundswell DNA, with 11s average periods and clean overhead days when the offshore wind arrives. By May the Atlantic settles down: average heights ease to around 5ft (1.5m), periods drop below 10s, and the ideal wind percentage falls to 39%. September is the stand-out transitional month, with average periods stretching back to 10.5s and offshore winds scoring a healthy 48% - a sign that the first meaningful groundswells of autumn are returning.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the seasonal flat spell at Parede. The Azores High locks in a persistent NNW/NW windswell regime, average swell heights hover at just 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and periods shrink to 8-9s. The S/SW swell window almost completely disappears, and the thermal NNW wind - not true offshore - blows for 60% or more of the month. Unless a rare SSW or WSW groundswell sneaks in behind a summer low, expect small, bumpy and mostly wind-affected conditions.
