The combination of deep extratropical cyclones tracking across the North Atlantic and high pressure over the Iberian Peninsula creates a repeating pattern: long-period W/WNW/NW swells rolling into the beach while offshore E/ENE/NE/NNE winds groom the surface. When the NAO goes negative, storm tracks shift south and deliver even better SW/WSW swell angles for this west-southwest-facing beach. Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
As the winter upper-level flow weakens, average wave heights drop to 1.6-2.1m (5.2-6.9ft) and periods settle into the 9-11s zone. April and May still see plenty of NW/WNW energy, but wind regimes start to switch from offshore continental flow to the first persistent NNW/NW summer breezes, lowering the percentage of clean sessions. September is the wildcard: the ocean remembers summer warmth but the Atlantic is already stirring again, and early autumn lows can inject fresh W/SW swell. Quality sessions come when a low-pressure system brushes the coast and drags the wind offshore.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest chapter. Average swell heights bottom out at 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft), periods hover in the 8-9s range, and the swell window is dominated by short-period NNW/NW windswell generated by the relentless northern flow. The thermal wind pattern at Pavoa de Varzim becomes overwhelmingly NNW, which is onshore for this west-southwest-facing beach and often leaves the surface chopped. Surfing is possible on smaller windswell days, especially in the early mornings before the seabreeze kicks up, but do not expect the power and consistency of the winter season.
