Today's Surf Conditions at Pedra Branca
Spot Overview & Description
Pedra Branca—also known as White Rock—is the storied left-hand reef that fires off the headland opposite the campsite in Ericeira. Its foundation is a flat, shallow slab studded with sand and sea urchins, demanding respect from the moment you paddle out. On smaller days, it offers a fun yet precarious left-hand wall, easy on the eyes but quick to punish a mistimed drop. When autumn swells march in, the wave transforms into a short, explosive, hollow gem; square barrels unload at up to double overhead, rewarding precision and punishing hesitation. To the south, inside Praia de Pedra Branca bay, a separate right-hander peels over a mix of sand and reef, stretching into a longer, playful wall suited to all abilities—a mellower counterpart to its slabby neighbor.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Pedra Branca's winter half-year is where the magic happens. As the North Atlantic storm track powers up, the Icelandic Low deepens, and long-period groundswell from the NW, WNW and W becomes the norm rather than the exception. Average wave heights sit in the 7-9ft (2.1-2.7m) range through this window, with periods consistently reaching the powerful 12-13s category. The NAO plays a key role: when the pressure gradient tightens between the Azores High and Icelandic Low, the Portuguese coast gets both more swell and more east-based offshore wind windows. Offshore winds from the ENE, E, ESE and SE are most frequent from October through January, setting up clean, hollow conditions on the west-facing beach. Winter water temperatures hover around 14-18°C, so a solid winter wetsuit is part of the equation.
