Best Surf Season (October - March)
Pedrogão's west-facing beach sits directly in the firing line of the North Atlantic storm track during autumn and winter. As the Azores High retreats and the polar front migrates south, strong extratropical cyclones roll toward Portugal, sending consistent WNW and NW groundswell into the coast. From October through March, average wave heights run 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) and average wave periods sit in the 11.4-13.1s range, which is powerful, long-period surf. The key to quality at Pedrogão is wind: when high pressure builds in the wake of a storm, offshore ONO/O/OSO/SO (east-to-southeast) winds groom the surf, and the data show ideal winds 25-34% of the time during these months. Water temperatures are 14-18°C (57-64°F), so it is winter wetsuit territory, but the open-Atlantic power makes it well worth it.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transition months. The averages drop to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods fall to 10.5-11.2s, yet there are still plenty of rideable waves. The wind is ideal only 18-19% of the time as the Azores High starts to expand in spring and retreats in early autumn. Expect a mix of WNW/NW groundswell and smaller, mid-period swell, with occasional clean windows when easterly offshore winds align. Surfing can be excellent for a few days at a time, but overall consistency drops compared with winter.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is structurally poor for Pedrogão. The Azores High becomes the dominant feature, and the Iberian Peninsula heats up to create a thermal low. Persistent northerly and north-northwesterly winds (NNW/NW) become onshore or cross-onshore at the beach, and ideal wind percentages fall to just 5-14%. Swell heights shrink to 4-5ft (1.3-1.5m) and average periods drop to 8.7-10.0s, producing weaker, shorter-period waves. Most of the energy is angled NNW, which is less favorable than the true WNW/W/NW window. The few surfable days usually come at dawn when the sea breeze is absent, or when a rogue low-pressure system sends more westerly swell and an offshore E/SE wind.
