Porto da Cruz seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Porto da Cruz is a northeast-facing slice of Madeira that lights up when the North Atlantic gets angry. From October through March, extratropical cyclones marching east across the Atlantic fire long-period groundswell toward the archipelago, with average wave heights pushing into the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range and periods sitting in the powerful 11-13 second bracket. The same large-scale pattern that produces these swells also brings more frequent cold fronts and periods of southerly to southwesterly offshore flow, giving this exposed northern shoreline its cleanest, most organized waves. It is the prime window for serious surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
Spring and early autumn are transitional. The storm track starts to retreat north and the Azores High begins to build, trimming average swell heights to 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) in April and back up to near 5ft (1.5m) by September. Wave periods are still rideable at 10-12s, but wind consistency drops and onshore northeasterly trade winds become more common. You will score smaller, cleaner days between wind pulses, especially when a southwesterly wind aligns with WNW-NNW groundswell that wraps into the bay.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest chapter. The Azores High locks in over the region, suppressing Atlantic lows and generating weak north-northeasterly windswell with average heights around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and short periods of 8-9s. Persistent N to NE winds blow straight onshore, and ideal offshore wind windows shrink to just 2-4 percent of the time. Surfing is possible, but Porto da Cruz is at its most inconsistent and wind-affected during these months.
