Praia Azul seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track comes alive and points squarely at Praia Azul. Deep extratropical lows marching eastward across the ocean generate consistent WNW, W and NW groundswells, with average swell heights climbing from 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) in October to 8-9ft (2.4-2.7m) during the heart of winter. Periods sit mostly in the 11-13 second range, which means real power behind the waves. The wind is the wildcard: while W/NW winds can ruin the surface, high pressure over Iberia often delivers offshore ENE/E/ESE/SE flow. When those offshore days line up, Praia Azul is an exposed west-facing beach that can hold serious, lined-up surf.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
Spring and early autumn form the shoulder season. April still receives decent Atlantic groundswell, but the period drops toward 10-11s and the wind shifts more frequently into the NNW. By May the average swell drops to 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and the ideal offshore wind window narrows to around 23%, making dawn patrol the only reliable bet. September is the brighter side of the shoulder: the first autumn lows begin to fire NW/WNW swells, the water is still warm and the offshore wind odds improve to nearly 30%. Expect clean but less consistent surf, and be ready to pick off the days when a storm tracks far enough south.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer at Praia Azul is all about the Azores High. The Atlantic storm track retreats north, and the surf becomes dominated by shorter-period NW/NNW windswell generated by strong northerly winds. Average swell heights hover around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), periods drop to 8.6-9.2s, and the wind is ideal for surfing only 13-16% of the time. The morning hours can still produce clean, fun waves when a light ENE/E/ESE offshore breeze beats the afternoon sea breeze, but this is not the time to plan a big surf trip. Grab a groveler and go early.
