January: Winter's Cleanest Window

The opening month is pure Algarve winter. The average swell sits at 0.8m (2.6ft) with a wave period of 8.1s, the highest of the year, while ideal surf windows run at 46 percent - the best of any month. Swell direction is dominated by the W/WSW quadrant (WSW 16.9%, W 16.6%, WNW 9.1%, SW 9.8%), but the preferred SE/SSE/S/SSW window still accounts for around 19.5 percent of the distribution. The most consequential swell for Monte Gordo is the SE/SSE component: it arrives with 1.5-2.5m (4.9-8.2ft) energy, enough to wrap cleanly into the beach. December's storms are still ringing through the North Atlantic, and when the long-period SW/SSW groundswell connects under NW-NNW offshore winds, Monte Gordo delivers punchy, hollow lines.

Air temperatures sit cool at 13.3°C on average, rainfall runs 1.87mm/day, and the water temperature holds at 15.2°C, so a quality 4/3mm wetsuit is standard. The dominance of NNW winds (26.9%) - light enough mostly under 20kph - is what keeps the beach glassy. Onshore S/SW winds are rare, meaning even if the swell is slightly undersized, on most days there is a clean, rideable bank to work with.
