Praia do CDS seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
At Praia do CDS the surf year is all about the North Atlantic. From October through March, the storm track deepens and low-pressure systems roll toward Iberia with impressive regularity. The average wave height sits between 5.5ft (1.7m) and 6.5ft (2.0m), with periods from 11.3 to 13.0 seconds, giving the beach the kind of long-period, powerful WNW, NW and W groundswell it is built to handle. The phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation matters too: negative phases often push the storm track into Iberia, generating even more of the west-southwest through northwest swell that lights up this beach. This is when the spot has real size and juice.
The winter trade-off is wind. The ideal offshore SSW/SW/WSW/W wind only blows 20-26 percent of the time during these months, and the prevailing NNW cross-shore plus occasional NE/ENE onshore flow can easily chop up the lineup. You need to pick your windows - usually around frontal passages and high pressure clear-outs - but when the wind turns offshore, the combination of big Atlantic swell and clean conditions is as good as it gets on this stretch of the Portuguese coast.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
April still holds onto solid winter swell - 5ft (1.5m) at 11.1 seconds - but with a much higher chance of clean winds. May and September are the true shoulder months: wave heights dip to 3.5-4ft (1.1-1.2m), periods hover between 10.0 and 10.5 seconds, and ideal wind improves to 33-35 percent. These months combine the last and first pulses of proper North Atlantic groundswell with lighter, more manageable wind patterns, making them the best bet for fun, rippable surf without the full winter grind.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the low season at Praia do CDS. The Azores High dominates, the Atlantic storm track retreats north, and average swell drops to only 3-3.5ft (1.0-1.1m) with periods below 9.5 seconds. The swell is overwhelmingly short-period NW windswell, and a strong NNW cross-shore wind blows on most days, sitting at 62-64 percent of all observations during July and August. Ideal wind still reaches 26-34 percent, but that is often just a brief morning window before the sea breeze kicks in. You can still find clean 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) waves on a longboard or fish - just don't expect winter-level power.
