Praia do Norte seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Praia do Norte is one of Europe's most exposed west-facing Atlantic arenas, and from October through March the North Atlantic storm machine is running at full tilt. Average swell heights sit in the 1.9m to 2.4m (6-8ft) range while average periods climb to 11-14 seconds, producing the long-period, powerful groundswells that make this stretch of Portuguese coast so famous. During deep winter, low-pressure systems and a more active jet stream aim relentless WNW and NW swell at the coast, and the ideal offshore flow from the NO/ONO/O/OSO quadrant is most frequent. This is the prime window for serious, heavy, and at times XL surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, the wave energy drops noticeably. Average heights settle around 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft) with periods shrinking to 10-11 seconds, meaning fewer powerful swells and less consistency. April can still deliver late-season winter pulses, while September sees the first stirrings of autumn as Atlantic lows and occasional tropical systems start to reawaken the North Atlantic. Winds are more variable during these shoulder months, so you need to time the offshore windows carefully to find clean, rippable conditions.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer brings the Azores High, a strong and persistent NNW wind regime, and a dramatic loss of ocean energy. Average wave heights sink to 1.3m (4-5ft) with average periods of only 8.7-9.3 seconds, which translates into smaller, average, punchy waves at best and weak, short-period conditions at worst. The ideal surfing wind drops to just 10-14% of the time, and the swell direction tables are dominated by locally generated NW and NNW windswell. Only the occasional pulse of southern-hemisphere swell or a lucky tropical storm track can offer anything truly memorable.
