Praia Grande seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic storm track takes over and Praia Grande lights up. With its west-northwest exposure, the beach lines up perfectly with the prevailing WNW, NW and NNW swell that rolls out of the mid-latitude cyclones. Average wave heights run from 6.5ft (2.0m) in October to 8.5ft (2.6m) in January, while periods hold between 11.4 and 13.0 seconds. This is the window for powerful, long-period groundswell. Better yet, the percentage of ideal offshore wind climbs to 18-24 percent, particularly from December through March, as high pressure over Iberia or offshore easterly drainage flow sets up clean surfaces. The combination of heavy Atlantic energy and east/southeast wind is what makes this stretch of Portuguese coast truly world-class.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
Spring and early autumn offer something in between. In April the average still sits near 6.5ft (2.0m) and the period at 11.1 seconds, but the strengthening northerly wind regime cuts the ideal offshore wind share to around 11 percent. May and September fall in at roughly 5.5ft (1.7m) and 5ft (1.6m) with periods around 10 seconds. The ocean is still full of WNW/NW swell, yet the wind is a bigger obstacle. Look for early mornings, lighter gradient days, or windows of southeast/east flow to find clean, rippable surf.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months bring the Azores High into full control. The Atlantic storm track shifts north, and Praia Grande is left with a background of short-period NNW and NW windswell averaging 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m). The average period drops to 8.5-9.2 seconds, and the ideal offshore wind is almost absent at 2-6 percent. Persistent NNW winds, often 20-40kph (13-25mph), put the wave quality on the downside most days. It is not completely flat, but the default summer product is small, lumpy and wind-affected; only a strong tropical disturbance or an early autumn cold front can break the pattern.
