Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars back to life as autumn deepens, and this west-facing Portuguese reef goes from summer slumber to full-on winter mode. From October through March, the average swell height sits solidly in the 6-8ft (1.8-2.5m) range, with average periods pushing past 12 seconds on a regular basis. The climatological storm track shifts south, with deep extratropical cyclones developing off the North American seaboard and marching across the Atlantic. These systems generate long-period groundswell from the W to NW quadrant that lines up perfectly with the reef. Crucially, offshore wind windows from the east to southeast quadrant become more frequent as high pressure builds over the Iberian Peninsula and continental Europe, so the percentage of clean surf days climbs to 22-26%. When the right combination emerges, the reef handles big, powerful waves with light offshore texture - this is the time to plan a trip.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months offer a mixed bag. April and May still see rideable swell - averages of 5.5-6.5ft (1.7-2.0m) - but the average period falls to 10-11 seconds as the North Atlantic starts to calm and water temperatures begin to warm. Northerly winds become increasingly dominant, shrinking the clean-surf windows and making conditions more wind-swell influenced. September is the beginning of the upward curve: the average period climbs back over 10.5 seconds, the first meaningful low-pressure systems form, and the Azores High begins to weaken. These months reward flexibility, as a good groundswell can coincide with light morning easterlies, but you will need to pick your moments.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the trade-off for living in paradise: warm air and water, but tiny surf. The Azores High pumps north and sets up a dominant NW to NNW flow across Portugal. Wave heights slump to 4.5-5ft (1.4-1.5m), periods drop to 8-9 seconds, and the swell is largely northerly windswell with a short, choppy character. Offshore wind percentages are nearly nonexistent - as low as 3% in July - so the reef rarely sees clean conditions. Still, the rare combination of a leftover north swell and a dawn offshore breeze can produce fun, rippable corners at this reef, especially for longboarders or smaller gear. For serious waves, this is the off-season.
