Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, Ribeira das Janelas is in its element. The Azores High weakens, the Icelandic Low deepens, and the North Atlantic storm track aims a steady stream of extratropical lows at the Portuguese coast. During negative NAO winters that storm track shifts even farther south, amplifying the size and frequency of the swells that arrive in this corner of the Atlantic. Swell heights average 6-9ft (1.8-2.7m) with periods of 11.5-13s, giving the N/NNE-facing stretch of sand plenty of power. The ideal offshore wind blows from the S, SSW, SW and WSW, and during this six-month window it blows around 17-21% of the time. When a low pressure center drifts past the Iberian Peninsula, the wind clock swings into the south quadrant and Ribeira das Janelas turns clean, hollow and seriously fun.
Fair Surf Season (April - June & September)
As winter loses its grip, the surf drops but doesn't disappear. Average swells run 4-7ft (1.2-2.1m) and the period drops to 9-11s. The N and NNE directions are still present, although they become increasingly wind-driven. Offshore wind days remain at 12-17%, but the lighter winds and warmer weather make the fair season more forgiving. This is the time to pick your windows: early mornings, days with a southwesterly breeze, and any late-season groundswell that pushes the period back into double digits.
Low Surf Season (July - August)
July and August are the most challenging months at this spot. The Azores High locks in, and the dominant NNE and NE trade winds blow directly onshore for most of the month. Ideal offshore wind drops to just 3-6%, while average swell heights sink to around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods of only 8-9s. Most days are small, windblown and shapeless. Only a rare passing thunderstorm or a southwesterly wind shift gives surfers a clean, rideable window. It is still possible to get wet, but the true magic waits for September.
