Sao Juliao seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Sao Juliao faces west-north-west and is therefore one of the most exposed beaches on the Lisbon coast. During the winter months the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Azores High weakens, allowing one low-pressure system after another to march toward the Iberian Peninsula. This is when average wave heights hover around 2.3-2.6m (7.5-8.5ft) with long periods between 12-13s, and the dominant swell directions (WSW, W, WNW and NW) line up perfectly with the beach. Offshore winds from the east and southeast are most frequent when high pressure builds in behind the storms, creating clean, powerful surf. Ideal wind windows occur 18-25% of the time, and quality can be exceptional.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
As the ocean transitions, the Atlantic still delivers rideable swell but with less consistency and power. April holds average heights near 2.0m (6.5ft) and a period of 11s, while May drops to 1.7m (5.5ft) and 10s as the Azores High begins to strengthen. September sees the first signs of autumn energy with average waves back to 1.6m (5.2ft) and periods around 10.5s. The problem during these months is the expanding north/northeast trade wind regime: the strong NNW winds that dominate make clean, offshore days rarer, with ideal conditions only 9-12% of the time. When an easterly wind does align with a fading NW swell, the beach can still offer surprisingly good waves away from the summer crowds.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest period at Sao Juliao. The Azores High sits square over the North Atlantic, pushing the storm track far to the north and leaving the Portuguese coast in a shadow of small, short-period swell. Average heights drop to 1.4-1.5m (4.5-5ft) with periods of 8.5-9.2s, and the swell is dominated by NNW/NW windswell rather than true groundswell. To make matters worse, the northerly wind machine is at full throttle, with NNW winds blowing 40-60% of the time and ideal offshore winds occurring only 2-5% of the time. Expect groveling conditions on a board with extra volume, and save your energy for dawn patrol before the ocean breeze comes up.
