Best Surf Season (October - March)
Sao Lourenco sits exposed to the open Atlantic and its west-north-west facing beach is a magnet for long-period groundswell. From October through March, the North Atlantic storm track angles toward Iberia, pushing average wave heights into the 2.0-2.6m (6.5-8.5ft) range with dominant periods of 11 to 13 seconds. The swell window - WSW through W, WNW and NW - is consistently energized by strong extratropical cyclones, and the percentage of offshore east-southeast wind days climbs to 20-25 percent. This is when the combination of real size, long-period energy and clean wind becomes most reliable.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and May ease out of winter with average swell heights around 1.7-2.0m (5.6-6.6ft) and periods dropping toward 10-11 seconds. The swell direction shifts northward into the NW/NNW quadrant, while persistent cross-shore northerly winds reduce the number of truly clean sessions. September is the mirror image: the ocean begins to wake up, periods lengthen back above 10 seconds, and offshore wind windows start to return. These months deliver rideable but less consistent surf.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August are the summer doldrums at Sao Lourenco. The Azores High locks in, the North Atlantic storm track retreats toward Iceland, and average swell heights fall to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft) with short periods of 8.5-9.2 seconds. The waverose becomes dominated by small NNW/NW windswell, while strong NNW winds blow up to 59 percent of the time. Ideal offshore wind drops to only 3-5 percent, leaving mostly poor, wind-affected conditions.
