Best Surf Season (December - February)
Shitovaya is a cold-water micro-wave spot, but winter is when the pieces finally come together. The Siberian High locks in over the continent and drives a steady NNW/N offshore flow across this SSE-facing bight, while the North Pacific storm track pushes more energy toward the coast. Average swell heights climb to 2.5-2.6ft (0.7-0.8m), with NNW windswell dominating the rose and occasional S/SSW lobes adding the right direction for the beach. The wave period still averages only around 5s, so surf is short-period and raw, but the combination of increased size and offshore wind makes December through February the most consistent-if most arctic-surf windows of the year.
Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)
The two shoulder seasons offer fewer guaranteed waves but a wider variety of opportunities. In spring, the S/SSW swell share grows dramatically, and ideal wind percentages improve to 8-10%; however, the swell shrinks to 2ft (0.6m) and onshore south winds become more common, making timing everything. Autumn is the opposite: the monsoon fades, the NNW offshore flow returns, and the S/SSW swell traces from the remnants of typhoon season can still fire when a front lines up. Both fair seasons reward surfers who watch the charts closely.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is distinctly sleepy at Shitovaya. The East Asian summer monsoon sets in with persistent SSE/S/SE winds that blow directly onshore at the beach, generating small, short-period windslop. Although the wave rose may look like a good southeastern swell chart-S 34-45%, SSE 20-27%-it is mostly 1.5-2ft (0.5-0.6m) local windswell with a 5-5.5s period. Add higher rainfall and humid air, and you have a lineup best saved for beginner sessions or a hopeful typhoon pulse.
