Sochi seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
Sochi is not a classic ocean-basin groundswell magnet. The Black Sea is a semi-enclosed, fetch-limited sea, and the waves that hit this SW-facing shoreline are mostly local windswell. Still, the winter months from November through February are the closest thing to a real surf season. The Mediterranean storm track becomes active, and cyclones sliding across the Black Sea send pulses out of the S/SSW/SW/WSW window. Average surf heights climb to 2-3ft (0.6-0.8m) and periods creep up to 5-6s. More importantly, offshore N/NE wind windows reach 17-22% of the time, offering the best chance to find clean, peaky waves between cold fronts. The phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the broader Euro-Atlantic pattern matters here too: when the NAO is negative, cold continental air is more likely to spill south over Russia and Mediterranean storms are more likely to track into the Black Sea, setting up the classic Sochi recipe of S/SW swell plus N/NE offshore wind. This is the time to watch the pressure charts, because when a low sits over the Black Sea and a continental high pushes dry air from the N/NE, Sochi can actually produce fun, rideable surf.
Fair Surf Season (March & October)
The transition months of March and October sit on the edge of the winter storm track. Ideal offshore wind frequency drops to around 13%, and average surf heights shrink to 1-2ft (0.3-0.5m) with periods under 5s. There can still be shoulder-season pulses, especially in October when the first strong lows of autumn move through, but consistency is poor. Expect lots of windblown W/WNW sea and only the occasional clean S/SW-oriented swell with N/NE winds.
Low Surf Season (April - September)
From April through September, the Black Sea settles into summer. A thermal low and sea-breeze regime takes over, with average surf heights dropping to 1-2ft (0.4m), wave periods falling to 4-4.5s, and ideal offshore wind only 5-11% of the time. The swell direction is dominated by W, WNW and NW windswell rather than the preferred S/SSW/SW/WSW angles. This is mostly a flat, mushy, groveling period, best for longboards, soft-tops and beginners. The exception is a slight September uptick as the autumn storm track begins to stir.
