Today's Surf Conditions at Ngor Rights
Spot Overview & Description
N’gor Rights sits on the far tip of the island, a lineup that earned its place in surfing lore with a cameo in The Endless Summer. This right-hand reef break is a study in consistency, often delivering rideable waves even when the onshore wind is blowing. The takeoff zone sits over an uneven reef, and while the quality of each ride depends on swell direction and size, the wave itself is known for its power and well-defined shape—a true intermediate’s playground. Swells from the northwest are the bread and butter here, with the break lighting up around the 3-foot mark (about a meter). Southwest and north pulses also sneak in, offering variety. The preferred wind is a steady southeast breeze, and the tide window is wide open: low, mid, or high, the reef keeps working. But watch your step. Two notorious rocks, Mami and Papi, lurk in the wave path, and the seafloor is carpeted with urchins—a painful reminder to keep your feet on the board. If you’re not staying on the island, you’ll need to boat across the half-mile channel to reach the lineup. The journey is part of the ritual.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roaring back to life in October is the key to Ngor Rights. As autumn deepens, powerful extratropical lows line up off North America and send long-period groundswell across the Atlantic toward West Africa. The average surf height climbs to 1.5-1.8m (5-6ft) with periods of 11-13s, and the swell direction locks into the NNW/NW window that this northwest-facing reef absolutely loves. During the heart of winter, January and February produce some of the most consistent overhead conditions of the year. The main challenge is wind: the northeast trades and Harmattan frequently blow from N, NNE and NE, so clean days are a rare commodity. When high pressure sets up favourably and the breeze becomes E/ESE/SE/SSE, however, Ngor Rights turns into a fast, hollow, world-class left-hander.
