Fence seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - September)
While the ideal swell window for Fence points into the E/NE quadrant, the statistics could not be clearer: the real surf engine here is S, SSW and SW groundswell. Between May and September the Southern Ocean storm track turns on, pushing average swell heights to 7-8ft (2.2-2.4m) and periods into the 11.7-12.5s range. This is the powerful, long-period zone where Fence starts to feel like a proper big-wave set-up. The favourable wind windows come from WSW and W, usually in the wake of a passing cold front, and when those align with a solid SW groundswell, the northeast-facing beach lights up. Water temps fall to 17-18°C, but the consistency and power more than make up for it.
Fair Surf Season (March - April, October - November)
The shoulder months are a true mixed bag. March and April see the ocean waking up after summer, with average swell size climbing to 6-7ft (2.0-2.1m) and periods stretching from 11.4s to 11.7s. SSW and SW start to dominate the wave rose, while stronger WSW and W winds offer cleaner offshore conditions. October and November are the mirror image: winter is fading, average periods drop back toward 10.8-11.0s, and the E/SE thermal wind becomes more persistent again. Ideal surf wind hovers around 21-26%, so you have to pick the frontal windows carefully. These months can produce excellent sessions, but they are less consistent than the heart of winter.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
High summer at Fence is the slow season in terms of power and period. Average swell heights settle at 6-7ft (1.9-2.0m) with periods in the 10.7-11.0s range - still rideable, but at the bottom end of the long-period class. The synoptic pattern is dominated by the South Atlantic high, which drives persistent E/ENE and ESE winds that blow onshore and cobble up the surface. SSW swell is still present in the wave rose, but it lacks the consistent punch of winter. There are fun days when a weak front or cut-off low swings winds into the SW/W quadrant, and the warm 19-20°C water makes those sessions all the more enjoyable. Just do not expect the heavy, firing conditions of winter.
