Best Surf Season (May - August)

The winter months along the Cape fold mountains are when Kleinmond truly comes alive. As the South Atlantic storm track ramps up and frontal systems march across the southern ocean, consistent long-period SW and SSW groundswell pulses roll into the Kogelberg coastline with average heights climbing to 8-9ft (2.4-2.8m) and periods holding in the powerful 12-13s range. Critically, the blustery summer south-easterlies are replaced by a much higher frequency of offshore NW and NNW winds, pushing the 'ideal wind' score above 40%. This is the window where the south-facing beach is groomed glassy and the S/SSW swells wrap perfectly into the bay. If you are chasing the best combination of size, period, and clean conditions, this is your window.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder seasons at Kleinmond offer a trade-off: plenty of solid swell, with April and September both averaging 2.3-2.6m (7.5-8.5ft) and periods around 12s, but the wind is not as consistently offshore. In April, ideal wind scores jump to 33% as the marine layer begins to cool; in September, the spring transition starts to reintroduce south-easterlies. You will score good waves on the right days, but the window between clean and lumpy is narrower. These months are for flexible surfers who can wait out the onshore pulses and take advantage of the early-season or late-season gems.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer at Kleinmond is dominated by the persistent south-easterly trade winds - the 'Cape Doctor' - which blow straight onshore and significantly reduce the percentage of rideable surf. Ideal wind conditions drop to 12-20%, and while there is still plenty of groundswell in the water (averaging 2.1-2.3m / 7-7.5ft with 11s power), the wave quality is often blown out and lumpy. The surf is not flat by any measure, but the consistent wind makes it a challenge. For beginner and intermediate surfers, the summer months are less forgiving; for the dedicated charger, the occasional light NNE morning wind or a lucky break in the south-easterly can still deliver fun, rippable waves.
