Muizenberg seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The South Atlantic storm track awakens during autumn and reaches full fury through the austral winter. Mean wave heights build from 2.6m in May to a peak of 2.9m in July, while wave periods stretch into the powerful 12-13s range. The same frontal systems that generate this groundswell also deliver the crucial post-frontal north-west to north-north-west winds that blow offshore at this SSE-facing beach. As a result, the statistics show the highest share of clean, ridable surf (26-31%) from May through August. It is cold, wet and at times intimidating, but this is when the bay's sandbanks really groom long-period SW/SSW/S swell into playful, rippable peaks.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

These shoulder months offer the best of both worlds and the worst of both worlds. Swell remains solid - around 7.5-9ft (2.3-2.7m) - with periods sitting between 11.6 and 12.2s, while offshore wind windows expand to 16-21% before either the summer or winter regimes fully lock in. Cold fronts become more frequent in March-April, while September-October feels the last big winter swells colliding with the return of springtime south-easterlies. You must choose your moments, but when a high pressure cell ridges past the Cape and the post-frontal NNW wind arrives, Muizenberg can still deliver world-class waves.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Mid-summer at Muizenberg is compromised by the South Atlantic high and the thermal low over the interior, which combine to drive the infamous 'Cape Doctor'. Winds blow from the SSE/SE quadrant 45-50% of the time, directly onshore for this coast, while average swell heights fall back to around 7.5ft (2.3m) and periods shorten to 11.1-11.4s. There is still plenty of long-period energy in the water, but nearly every session becomes a battle with surface texture, drift and chop. Dawn patrol under a light NW land breeze remains the best chance; otherwise the summer months are about waiting for a passing high pressure cell to gift a rare clean morning.
