Strand seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
During the austral autumn and winter, the Southern Ocean switches on and the southwest-facing Strand beach sits directly in the firing line of repeated mid-latitude cyclones. Average swell heights climb from 8ft (2.5m) in May to a winter peak around 9ft (2.8m), while average wave periods stretch out to 12.4-12.5s - firmly in the powerful long-period class. Equally important, the frequency of ideal wind windows jumps to 55-57% in May, June and July as the dominant summer SSE/SE gradient weakens and cooler, more offshore-friendly flow takes over. This is the prime window for consistent, powerful, well-groomed SW and WSW groundswell at Strand.
Fair Surf Season (April, September and October)
The shoulder months offer a great balance of size and quality, but require more patience. April is the standout, with ideal wind windows hitting 44% while average swell sits at 7.5ft (2.3m) and a long 12.0s period. September still holds solid 8.5ft (2.6m) groundswell, though the wind quality backs off to 39% as the spring transition begins. October keeps 7.5ft (2.3m) of SSW/SW energy alive but the wind regime becomes more summer-like, with ideal windows dropping to 30%. These are excellent months for knowledgeable surfers who can pick the right day.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
It is never flat at Strand - average swell remains a healthy 7-7.5ft (2.1-2.3m) throughout the summer half-year from the dominant SW and SSW windows. The real problem is wind. The South Atlantic High strengthens, and the famous summer 'Cape Doctor' SSE/SE wind becomes a near-daily feature across False Bay. Ideal wind windows sink to between 19% and 30% from November through March, with December and January the most wind-affected. Early-morning land breezes provide the best sessions, but the ever-present cross-shore chop keeps this from being the dependable quality season.
