Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Dunes is a true winter-wave spot along the South African coast. As the Southern Ocean storm track shifts northward through the southern winter, the sub-Antarctic low-pressure systems line up like freight trains in the roaring forties. Average swell heights climb from 2.6m (8.5ft) to 2.9m (9.5ft), with periods sitting in the 12.4 to 12.6s range - powerful, long-period groundswell for sure. At the same time, the offshore wind window (ONO/O/OSO/SO) peaks in reliability, with ideal conditions running between 20 and 25 percent of the time. When the WSW/W/WNW component lines up with a clean south-east flow, this beach really starts to fire.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April is the autumn ramp-up month. The average swell pushes to 2.4m (7.9ft) and periods stretch to 12.2s, while the ideal wind percentage jumps to 20 percent - a clear sign that the winter machinery is starting to roll. September is the mirror image in spring: the ocean still holds plenty of power with 2.7m (8.9ft) average swell at 12.1s, but the wind windows become less consistent and drop to around 16 percent. These months deliver serious swell, but the daily quality is more dependent on wind alignment.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The summer half-year is the quiet period at The Dunes. From October through March, the South Atlantic high drifts south and the main storm track weakens. Average heights settle around 2.3 to 2.4m (7.5 to 7.9ft) and periods sit closer to 11 to 11.5s. The swell rose becomes dominated by S and SSW/SW energy, while the all-important WSW/W/WNW/NW window shrinks to a relatively slim slice of the total. Strong SSE and S winds are frequent, and the ideal offshore wind percentage drops to 9-14 percent. It is by no means flat, but the consistent, firing, winter-class days are mostly a May-to-August prize.
