Best Surf Season (May - August)

Umdloti is at its finest through the Southern Hemisphere winter. As the high-pressure belt shifts north and cold fronts sweep under South Africa, the Indian Ocean starts sending regular S and SSE groundswells up the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Average wave heights hold around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods push into the 10-10.8s range, giving the east-southeast-facing banks real power. Even more important, the wind turns favorable: ideal surf wind climbs to 47-60% during May-August, with the classic WNW and NW land breeze regularly grooming the faces. Water temperatures drop to 21-23°C but remain comfortable in a 3/2 or springsuit. This is when Umdloti becomes a consistent, lined-up, rippable wave.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

The shoulder months are a trade-off. March-April sees the first strong swells of autumn and ideal wind improving to 28-40%, while September-October retains winter swell height but watches the NE trade wind rebuild as spring warms the interior. Average periods in these months sit around 9.2-10.0s, so the surf has power but can be less predictable. Chasing the post-frontal W and WNW windows is the name of the game; when the pattern aligns, these months deliver surprisingly good sessions with fewer crowds and milder air.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Midsummer is Umdloti's weakest stretch. From November through February, the average period drops to 8.7-9.4s, ideal wind falls to 18-28%, and the NE and ENE trade winds blow straight onshore for long stretches. The swell is still present - mostly E, ESE and SE at 5-6ft (1.6-1.7m) - but it is often short-period and chopped up by afternoon sea breezes. Tropical lows in the Mozambique Channel and occasional cut-off lows can briefly supercharge the surf, transforming the spot with punchy E and SE swell. Otherwise, expect warm water (24-25.6°C), humid air, summer thunderstorms and a lot of groveling. Early mornings are the best bet.
