Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is in full swing through these months, with the polar front driving strong low-pressure systems across the Bay of Biscay and into Iberia. At Aguieira, this shows up as average swells of 4.5-6ft (1.4-1.8m) with long-period energy in the 10-13s range, often under the influence of southerly and southwesterly offshore winds. Despite the cooler air and active frontal passages, this window delivers the highest percentage of clean, ridable surf - especially from October through December when ideal wind conditions peak near 30 percent.
Fair Surf Season (April and September)
The shoulder seasons offer a useful compromise. April and September still see the North Atlantic sending mixed-period swell, but the average energy drops to around 4ft (1.2-1.3m) and periods ease to the 8.8-9.5s range. The wind patterns are more transitional: spring can throw southerly offshores ahead of low pressure, while early autumn holds on to warm water and the first signs of larger groundswell. These months are often the most comfortable for surfing, even if the consistency is less reliable than midwinter.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer is the quiet time at Aguieira. The Azores High settles over the region and the Atlantic storm track retreats to the north; average wave heights drop to 0.8-1m (2.6-3.3ft) and periods shrink to 7-8s. This creates small, windswell-dominated surf. Add a persistent northerly and northeasterly breeze - the classic Iberian summer pattern - and many days end up onshore and soft. Only occasional longer-period NW pulses can overcome the summertime lull, but those are rare. For consistent quality, wait for autumn.
