Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life between October and March, and Berria's north-facing beach is right in the firing line. Average surf heights sit between 4.9ft (1.5m) and 6.6ft (2.0m), while average periods run a powerful 11-13s. The synoptic pattern is the engine: extratropical lows march eastward across the Atlantic, sending long-period NW and NNW groundswell toward the Cantabrian coast. Ahead of these fronts, S and SSW winds often blow offshore at Berria, keeping the ocean clean and lined up. Ideal surf windows peak at 46-53% in December-February, with December topping the calendar at 53%. When the NAO goes negative, the storm track shifts south and this window grows even more consistent. This is the go-to time for serious waves.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
The shoulder months are a game of watching the forecast closely. April averages 4.6ft (1.4m) surf with 10.9s periods, and May still offers 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves between onshore spells, though ideal wind chances slip to 31%. September is the comeback month: the first Atlantic lows of autumn lift average swell back to 3.9ft (1.2m), periods stretch to 10.4s, and ideal wind odds improve to 36%. On good days you will find clean, punchy, rippable waves; on bad days, a stiff W/NW wind turns Berria into a lumpy mess. It's a gamble, but the potential is real.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet period. With the Azores High dominating and the storm track pushed north, Berria has to rely on weak NW windswell. Average heights drop to 3-3.3ft (0.9-1.0m), periods shrink to 8.9-9.3s, and the ideal offshore wind window tumbles to just 22-25%. The Iberian thermal low creates a daily NW/NNW sea breeze that is onshore here, chopping up the small swell by mid-morning. Water temps are at their warmest - up to 22.2°C in August - and the beach is beautiful, but true surfable waves are few and far between. Unless you are a longboarder on a tiny NW pulse, summer is best spent elsewhere.
